Untitled 29 from the series of INtheVISIBLE, 2013 By Arslan Sukan Archival inkjet print on baryta photographic paper Image size: 80 cm x 106 cm Edition 1/3 + 1AP Signed and Unframed Sukan’s photographic work explores the conventions of the modern white cube as both an architectural context and as a content subject in and of itself. By addressing the notions of spatial memory, presentation and representation, this exhibition enhance the confrontation between visibility and invisibility in social and phenomenological terms. By means of deconstruction, intervention, and reconstruction of the white cube, Sukan brings complicity between opposites and creates dualism between recognition and non-recognition, visibility and invisibility, abstraction and concrete concepts. The result is an entirely new space, an architecture of past and future, with a continuously shifting viewpoint. Sukan proposes a phenomenal situation, challenging the viewer on the realism of the photograph and the memory of a space, while also opening up the horizons of the viewer’s perception and interpretation of the exhibition's/ their own immediate setting. We know that Native Americans have long had a leaning toward the Democratic Party, but we took this assignment on because it is relevant, not to be political.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ There is wide recognition now that Christopher Columbus did not discover America in 1492 and the events in Minneapolis have accelerated the debate on the possibility of institutionalised racism in the teaching of American history. This is not a discussion we want to fully engage in - as we are ill equipped to add value, but I do want to celebrate some of the tribal elders I have had the fortune to encounter in the last month. Their pride, manners, grace and humility have been humbling. We have made new friends in the North.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ For this project we worked with Chief John Spotted Tail, the great-great-grandson of the fabled Lakota chief Spotted Tail. We spent two days with him in Northern Wyoming and he was so excited to wear the headpiece that only the most senior Native American chiefs like him can wear.     A stand of spinous silver birch gather, shining white against the inky night... Over a three-year period, Goodall has visited areas of British forest and moorland to make images that he refers to as being 'more akin to fairytale than documentary'. There is indeed an unreal quality to the images, and this is perhaps a result of using artificial lighting; it reminds one of those spooky, unnaturally lit forests we see in the movies. In the absence of any natural illumination (save for a few that include the moon), scenes are lit as if they are in a studio setting. This results in imagery that feels eerily unfamiliar; transporting the viewer from the recognisable landscape into a kind of liminal netherworld - it's the landscape, but not as we are used to seeing it. Goodall responds to this observation by speaking about the possibility of the darkness being seen as a metaphor for the unconscious mind; the 'light' of consciousness illuminates the known forms of tree and rock, but beyond these certainties lies the unknown.
